So, this month let’s quit thinking about money and have fun unpacking your mental health.

I’ve divided the information below into two parts.

Part 1 – is the theme and information from the Queensland Mental Health Week website and Part 2 – are my professional suggestions and experience.

Let’s get started…

Part 1 – Take time for mental health.

Research shows there are six simple actions we can take to improve our moods, build resilience and boost well-being. These simple actions are internationally recognised as the Wheel of Wellbeing*.

Regularly practising these actions are beneficial for everyone.

Here’s the Six Simple Actions:

  • Take time to be active — it’s good for your mind as well as your body.
  • Take time to learn — learning new things can make you more confident as well as being fun.
  • Take time to give — practice small acts of kindness, volunteering time, or simply helping a friend in need can help you feel more satisfied with life.
  • Take time to connect — spending time with other people is important to everyone’s mental well-being.
  • Take time to enjoy the moment — paying more attention to the present and the world around you helps relieve stress and makes you feel better.
  • Take time to care for our planet — keeping our planet in shape is the best recipe for world well-being.

*The Wheel of Well-being was developed by the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust.

Part 2 – My professional suggestions and experience.

The Wheel of Well-being is like having the skills and knowledge to make a computer work along with the right tools to undertake regular repairs and maintenance.

BE ACTIVE with the things you love to do. This is what known as ‘good stress’ for your bones, heart, muscles, thought processes, emotion and so. Being active ‘swimming, walking, hiking, biking etc. clears the cobwebs from your mind to think more clearly and quickly, to not sweat the small stuff and helps you smile and feel happier for longer.

Being active releases many natural happy chemicals like dopamine and adrenaline. This natural feel good high is the best addiction to have. It’s free and you have an endless supply of it, but only when you activate it and that is as easy as walking outside.

Being active, preferably outside will speed up and enhance the Happy Chemical supply into your body uplifting your mood.  The benefits provided from natures natural rejuvenators are FREE. The only catch is you must go outside for sunshine, it needs direct contact with your skin to create vitamin D. The natural sunlight in the morning and afternoon to re-calibrate your melatonin, rest and sleep patterns.

Fresh air and exercise to strengthen and raise your heartbeat to clean out the muck in your blood, and oxygen to assist in healing your body. To exercise your eyes for long and short distance. To observe the flow of nature.

KEEP LEARNING –  Learning something new is growing an ageless mind that reduces the risk of Alzheimer’s and Dementia. Recall what you’re intrigued or curious about or that’s fun and interesting? Learning something new connects neurological pathways but mostly activates the wonderment in you, the thrill and joy of being wowed. The aha’s in life add a richness and an inner dimension that’s confident, expansive, youthful and attractive. This also makes you an ‘interesting party guest’ and that can only be a good thing.

GIVE – It’s the most enjoyable thing to do. It’s actually where meaning, satisfaction and fulfilment are momentarily experienced and embedded as a unique type of euphoria. Giving is a gift to others, where you help and volunteer your time, item or money. You were designed to naturally give and receive. This is why kids love to give, receive and share.

Have you noticed how kids can’t wait to give their present at a party, that’s because they’re whole body recalls the ecstatic thrill of receiving and sharing gifts? Kids want that same thrill for the recipient. Give to give a thrill and give to be kind. Patients is a gift, be generous with your thoughts and ideas, give time, a meal, unwanted items.  There is always something to give.

CONNECT – Connection is like an invisible hug of personal or tribal validation. Safety for the soul to connect, rest, relax, feel a sense of warmth, trust and contentment. When you connect you feel wanted, valued a sense of giving and receiving.

Connections are gender-less that expand human potential. Each connection you have dissipates loneliness, increases oxytocin and celebrates the presents of you with another or many.

There are a multitude of opportunities, all day and every day for you to connect and lift the hearts of everyone around you. Go for it! Give the gift of you.

TAKE NOTICE –  Take time to enjoy the moment. Smell the roses! Be grateful that you have the sensory and conscious ability to appreciate feeling the breeze on your face, the rain droplets on your lips and the sounds of serenity in your ears.

Notice the acts of kindness, the beauty of natures interplay. Observe joyfully, like a camera zooming in and out on the detail of life. Be in the moment as you notice the detail of a tree, a leaf, a caterpillar, a baby painting its face as it attempts to eat mushy food. Lose yourself in the awe of discovery.

Indulge your senses further, let go of what you know and consider for a moment to let go of the label or title of what you’re noticing (example ‘tree’) and look it as though never seen before, ask yourself what is this that I’m looking at, texture, density, colours and so on?

It’s important to be present in the now because too often you’re worrying about the past or the future. When that happens bring yourself back to the here and now.

CARE FOR OUR PLANET – Take the time to care. Doing the right thing does take time, and when armed with quality knowledge, the effort makes you feel even better. An inner glow shines when humans do the right thing for all. A greater contribution is important for every person’s existence otherwise the narcissist will rule.

Are you re-using, redeploying or recycling plastics, paper, clothes, are you helping the climate by carpooling, taking public transport, solar energy and compost bins? Get involved in community planet projects, share renewable opinions and ideas, and reduce road rage by staying calm and patient because road rage increases exhaust pollutants and noise pollutants from screaming beeping people.

Have you realised what’s important?

  • The Wheel of Well-being is about YOU.
  • The activities are about elevating and enhancing your emotional mood and perspective about life.
  • Everything is about you being connected to yourself and another person.

The key points are;

  1. Take Time for Mental Health.
  2. Without mental health you do not have the mental clarity or physical endurance to create money.

Deeper insights for you to think about and consider

  1. Mental health is essential and gives meaning to your life each day.
  2. Your mental health contributes to the community’s mental health and wellness
